Research in Psychology at the University of Edinburgh targets scientific and applied research on a key challenge for the 21st century: how do human cognition, human behaviour and the human brain develop and function from infancy through to later life? Its research approach is to undertake discovery science on topics that are of interest both to other scientists and to the general public, focusing on how and why individuals differ throughout the lifespan, how memory, language, perception and action develop and function in the healthy brain, and how cognition and behaviour are affected by and respond to focal brain damage and brain diseases.

Effects of perceptual similarity but not semantic association on false recognition in aging
This study investigated semantic and perceptual influences on false recognition in older and young adults in a variant on the Deese-Roediger-McDermott paradigm. In two experiments, participants encoded intermixed sets of ... -

Aging, working memory capacity and the proactive control of recollection: an event-related potential study
The present study investigated the role of working memory capacity (WMC) in the control of recollection in young and older adults. We used electroencephalographic event-related potentials (ERPs) to examine the effects of ... -
The Delicate Business of Identity full transcripts
The dataset consists of extracts from interviews that were conducted in Arabic with Syrian people, which were transcribed using Jefferson (2004) notation, transliterated, and translated. Identity has often been approached ... -
Stimuli set and EEG data for VPE2 study
The second of two event-related brain potential (ERP) experiments on cue-based interference from different types of linguistic representations during ellipsis resolution. The dataset includes the experimental stimuli set ... -
Stimuli set and EEG data for Kuperberg et al. (2011) study
An event-related brain potential (ERP) experiment on cue-based interference from different types of linguistic representations during ellipsis resolution. The dataset includes the experimental stimuli set and the raw EEG ... -
Stimuli set and EEG data for VPE1 study

Activity manipulation and eating, 2015
The data come from a third in a series of experimental studies looking at the effect of gender identity threat on food choices. The hypothesis tested was that, when presented with a masculinity threat, men would choose ... -
Student ratings of food masculinity, healthiness and palatability, 2015
This short study provided groundwork for later research looking at the effect of gender threat on food choices. In this current study, a snowball sample of 128 university students residing in the UK were recruited ... -
The student diet
This survey aimed to establish what foods are typically eaten by students in the United Kingdom as preliminary information for later studies of gender identity and diet. Specifically, we aimed to uncover what foods were ... -
